Yorkshire Competition 8th& 9th October 2011

Nineteen swimmers from Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club attended this year’s prestigious Level 1 meet at Ponds Forge. Lucy Fletcher, first BOBSC swimmer of the day and new to competitive galas, produced a freestyle best time to set the bar for the rest of the swimmers.  In the 9/10 boys Alex Holliday swam his heart out in the 50m freestyle.
The girls 10/11 year olds were the next to produce exciting swims; Olivia Rowbotham, Emily Norton and Katie Winstanley making breaststroke look easy, and not to be outdone Thomas Speed also powered though his breast stroke in the 11/12 year old boys event.
In 100m Backstroke Holly Milnes and Claire Berry both produced new personal best times to end the first morning session.
Lucy Fletcher produced another best time in her favourite stroke, Breast stroke. The 10/11 girls 100 backstroke again featured Olivia and Emily with the addition of Libby Turner, all swimming out of their skins and gaining new PB’s.  Thomas Speed added another PB in the 200m IM.
In the 14yrs and over, the girls were next on the blocks and in 100m freestyle Daisy Key, Hannah Barker, Holly Mawby , Caitlin Turner, Joanne Archer and Brindley Turner all showed their worth. The boys also turned in good performances in the 100m Free, with Steven Dallamore and Matthew Holroyd keeping the excitement going with great swims.  Holly Milnes took on the 12/13y girls in the 100m Butterfly , knocking almost 5 seconds off her time and producing a smile that seemed to touch both her ears followed by Stefan McCrum again for the boys in the 100m Butterfly 13/14 year olds.
Not to be outdone, in the 10/11y girls Libby and Katie showed how good they were in all four strokes to again produce PBs in the 200m IM. Finishing the first day in great style was Thomas, joined this time by Reece Tate in the 100m backstroke and again fantastically both achieving new PBs.
On the second day, Georgia Richardson joined Holly Milnes and Claire Berry in the 200m IM 12/13y girls and again personal best times were achieved.  Daisy and Joanne followed in the 14y and over 100m Breaststroke with great performances and more PBs . Next was Matthew swimming 100m breaststroke in the 15 and over age group competing against an Olympian and ex BOBSC swimmer (James Kirton) to finish in the last ten swimmers. In the last race of the morning session Holly, Georgia and Claire again achieving PB times in the 12/13y 100m freestyle.
The final session started well with Matthew going first in an attempt to gain a time to swim 100m backstroke in next year’s National competitions only just missing out (next time Matthew). Next in the 14y and over girls 100 backstroke, first Holly Mawby then Joanne and Hannah swam excellent races followed by Brindley gaining a time ever closer to a place in next year’s National competition. Reece and Thomas sped through the 11/12 boys 100m Freestyle both attaining PBs and keeping this momentum of great swims going were Olivia, Emily, Libby and Katie in the 100m freestyle. Claire, Holly and Georgia followed in the 12/13y girls 100m breaststroke , coming to the last two events to finish off a great weekend, where in the 200m IM first Matthew then the girls Hannah, Caitlin, Holly and Brindley all powered through this four stroke event.
This the first target meet of the season showed that Borough of Barnsley swimming club are on track for a great year with so many fast times, a LARGE well done from the Club to all who swam.

Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club Compete at Scarborough

A winning weekend in Scarborough

A weekend away in Scarborough was the order of the day for twenty swimmers from the Borough of Barnsley swimming club (BOBSC). They were attending the annual Scarborough A/B graded meet held at the Scarborough swimming pool near Peasholme Park. The first events were the 200m and 400m frontcrawl held on the Friday night. This was followed by an evening meal and an early night before a very early morning call for the following day’s events.
The majority of swimmers had a very productive weekend coming away from the event with more than one award.
However the final event of the weekend was undoubtedly the most exciting for the BOBSC swimmers.  This event is the ‘skins’ whereby the  six swimmers who record the fastest times in the 200m Individual Medley are placed into a final swim off situation. The names of the four different strokes ie; backstroke, breaskstroke, butterfly and frontcrawl are placed into a hat.  One of these strokes is then drawn out and the six competitors swim 50m of that particular stroke.  The slowest swimmer is eliminated until finally there are only two swimmers.
What proved to be so exciting for BOBSC was two of the clubs swimmers, twelve year olds Claire Berry and Holly Milnes were both in the event.  Both swam exceptionally well and were in the final three.  By a very narrow margin Holly was pipped to the post which left Claire and a swimmer from another local club competing for the £50 first prize.  At the 25m turn Claire clearly turned in second place, however a very strong turn and under water phase saw her pull neck and neck with her competitor.  The atmosphere in the pool was electric with the Barnsley chaperones and swimmers shouting and cheering.  Claire fought hard to the end and won the event much to the joy of the very hoarse Barnsley contingent.

Borough of Barnsley at the regional championships

This weekend BOBSC were represented at the North East Region’s Championships by three of their elite athletes; 18 year old brothers Matthew Holroyd and Jack Holroyd, and 15 year old Brindley Turner.
The region stretches from the borders of Scotland to South Yorkshire with some of the countries fastest swimmers participating in the event.
All three of the Barnsley swimmers made finals and produced personal best times (PBs) nearly attaining National times in two cases. Head Coach Paul Braithwaite was more than pleased with the results stating “with only a small number of participants, Barnsley made a big impact on this years NER long course Championships, a fantastic effort by all three swimmers”.

SHEFFIELD & DISTRICT GALA
PONDS FORGE INTERNATIONAL POOL

This years Sheffield & District Gala was an exciting event attended by all the clubs within the Sheffield area held at the Ponds Forge International venue. This event is known for the expensive trophies which can be won, some of which date back to the early 1900’s.  Five of these trophies were won by the Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club (BOBSC) the most prestigious of these is the 3ft high Corporation Cup, won by one of the three submitted mens/boys teams from BOBSC.  Unfortunately this cup is now deemed too expensive to present and is kept under lock and key in the Sheffield Town Hall.  The boys were however presented with a plaque to celebrate their achievement.

The majority of swimmers who attended the meet were rewarded with medals and all who swam recorded a number of personal best times.  For some of the younger swimmers it was their first time swimming at this International pool and their excitement seemed to send a buzz around the rest of the squad.

The poolside helpers were stretched to their limits because of the no marshalling rule at this event.  Paul Braithwaite the Head Coach stated “all the BOBSC team managers were exceptional at this gala, they really helped to make the day”.

Results were:
Specialist Trophies – Long Plunge awarded to 13 year old  Daniel Higgins with a distance of 17.00m, his nearest rival totalling a distance of 15.50m

BOROUGH OF BARNSLEY XMAS SPRINT MEET
The Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club held their 15th Annual B/C Graded Xmas Sprint Meet on Saturday 11th December at the Ponds Forge International Pool in Sheffield. Around 400 swimmers competed in what has become one of the most popular competitions in the swimming calendar.  The competition organisers were concerned that the event would not take place because of the sheer volume of snowfall over the last month and fears were that the competitors, some of who travel from as far as Cumbria, would not make it to the event.  A turn in the weather however ensured that the meet went ahead and it proved a huge success.
The Barnsley swimmers came away with 54 medals and 10 speeding tickets on the day and coaches, Paul Braithwaite, Misha and Steve Carter were pleased with the results.

Eight  swimmers from the Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club took part in the event with 18 year old Jack Holroyd first to swim in the 100m Freestyle.   It was a tremendous start for the club with Jack recording a time just outside of his personal best with a 54.40. His second event, the 50m Breaststroke saw him take a place in the final recording a time of 31.32 and finishing in 6th place.  Jacks final event of the weekend was the 400m Freestyle and once again he recorded an excellent PB of 4.24.39.

Barnsley Premier Leisure hosted this years Schools Aqua Festival at the Metrodome Leisure Centre.  The event which was held over two days saw pupils from years 3&4 on the first day and years 5&6 on the final day.
The Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club Head Coach, Paul Braithwaite who helped to organise the event said that the two days were a success and that the schools who took part should be extremely proud of their performances in all the events.
Day one which was aimed mainly for the non competitive side of swimming saw pupils from schools taking part in a variety of races and relays which were both challenging and fun, providing a perfect introduction to swimming.
Day two included all the four competitive strokes of backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle and relay events.
Medals were awarded to the individual winners of each event on both of the days and each attendee received a certificate.  The winning schools received a trophy.  The following schools took part in the two day events:
Burton Road, High View Primary, Sandhill Primary, Royston Summerfields, Millhouse Primary, Oakhill, Thurgoland, St Mary’s and Shafton.  The two winning schools of the first day’s event were Burton Road and Sandhill Hill Primary with the following day’s winners of Royston Summer Fields and Thurgoland Primary.

Fun Night

Sunday night saw the annual Borough of Barnsley Fun Night session held at the newly refurbished Hoyland Leisure Centre.  This is an event which is normally held in December unfortunately being postponed because of the amount of snowfall the town saw in that particular month.

Following a meeting with the Chairman and the Young Club Captains, Matthew Holroyd and Joanne Archer the committee were persuaded to hold the event at the end of the swimming season.  It was an evening with unusual events all of which were in the pool, titled, “Baton down the Hatches”, “Chain Gang”, “Dress the Dummy” and “Head to Head” to name but a few.  Everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed the evening especially the spectators (parents) on the balcony.  The two winning teams, (ten teams in total) were finally announced, captained by none other that the two Club Captains.

The final was close but the eventual winner was Matthew and his team ranging from 7  to 17 year olds.

Seventeen year old Matthew is now looking forward to the National Championships in August which will be held this year at The Ponds Forge International Pool in Sheffield.  He competes in the 200m Breaststroke and the 200m Backstroke.  His twin brother Jack and fellow Borough of Barnsley swimmer  fifteen  year old Brindley Turner  will be also representing the club in this prestigious event with Jack in the 50m Freestyle and Brindley swimming the 100m Backstroke.

Summer Sizzler

The Borough Of Barnsley Swimming Club celebrated the 4th of July in style, hosting their annual Summer Sizzler Gala at Ponds Forge and giving the whole day an American feel with flags, hats and costumes.

Our local swimmers rose to the occasion and the following all won gold in their respective races : Alexander Holliday ; Liam Exley ; Adam Schofield ; John Moody ; Holly Milnes ; Stefan McCrum ; Jack Holroyd ; Alex Bushby ; Louise Holmes ; Thomas Speed ; Brindley Turner ; Joanne Archer and Jonathan Higgins. Several Barnsley swimmers also achieved Yorkshire Qualifying times and there were countless personal best performances throughout the day.

Scarborough A/B Meet

Five swimmers represented the Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club at the Scarborough A/B Weekend Gala. Charlotte Robinson and Holly Turner both achieved personal best times and just missed out on medals in a tough line up of 12 year old girls.  Georgia Richardson won B grade Gold (100 IM), Silver (50 free), Bronze (50 breast) and speeding tickets for 50 back and fly. Reece Tate won A grade silver (400 free) and ribbons for 100 IM, 50 free and 50 back and a B grade bronze medal for breast. Alex Holiday won a cracking A grade gold in 50m breast and ribbons for 50 back and free. It was a great, fun weekend and all 5 swimmers did BOBSC proud.
The climax though had to be the dragon peddle boat competition at the lake in Peasholm Park (next to the pool) where all 5 swimmers in one boat taking on the dads and mums in two other boats managed to completely drench them - definitely deserving of gold medals all round.  Tip for the ladies, don't wear white!

Stocksbridge Spring Sprints

The Borough Of Barnsley Swimming Club had a good day at the annual Stocksbridge gala where all the races are 50m sprints. 10yr old Natasha Davies was on good form winning gold in the backstroke and reaching the final in each of the other three strokes. There were also finals for Paige Owen, Reece Tate, Hannah Barker, Alex Crosby, Liam Crosby, Adam Schofield and Joanne Archer. 10yr old Charlie Smith-Greenwood made a big impact in his first gala appearance reaching the final of the front crawl.

A special mention goes to Amy Hook and her younger brother James who are both now leaving the club to join Sheffield. Amy reached two finals and James continued his amazing form winning gold in all four of his races. BOBSC wishes them well at their new club.

Yorkshire Age Group Championships Gala Two

Ten year old  Natasha Davies proved her versatility with two great performances in the demanding Individual Medley races at the second British Gas Yorkshire Age Group Championships held in Leeds. She finished 4th in the 400m and 5th in the 200m event.
Ten year old James Hook from Dodworth swam in six events and in each race set a new personal best time. He went on to appear in five finals finishing 11th in the 400m Freestyle, 10th in the 200m Free, 10th in the 200m Backstroke, 6th in the 200m Individual Medley, 5th in the 400m IM and 4th in the 200m Breaststroke, missing out on a medal place by only 0.25sec. A fantastic display from one of the club's up and coming young talents.

Meanwhile, no doubt inspired by the club's South Yorkshire Young Coach Of The Year 2009 Misha Carter, four of the senior club members Matthew Holroyd, Thomas Shillaw, Michael Yeates and Adam Schofield spent a grueling week in Sheffield studying their Level One ASA Teaching Qualification.
